Job Description
Join Fitzroy River Water as a Water Quality Intern and gain invaluable hands-on experience in a critical government utility setting. This placement offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the vital work of ensuring high-quality drinking water and environmentally sound wastewater management for the Rockhampton community. You will work alongside experienced professionals, applying scientific principles to real-world challenges in water treatment, distribution, and environmental monitoring. This internship is designed to provide comprehensive exposure to the operational, technical, and regulatory aspects of water quality management within a public utility.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the collection and analysis of water samples from various sources, including treatment plants, reservoirs, and distribution networks.
- Conduct laboratory tests and experiments to assess physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters of water samples.
- Support field investigations and site visits related to water quality issues or infrastructure projects.
- Contribute to the maintenance of accurate data records and assist with data entry and analysis using relevant software.
- Learn and adhere to all health, safety, and environmental protocols and standards.
- Prepare preliminary reports and presentations on findings for review by senior staff.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on water quality improvement initiatives.
- Assist with the calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's degree program in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Civil Engineering, or a related scientific/engineering discipline.
- Basic understanding of water quality principles and analytical techniques.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous laboratory experience, even from academic projects.
- Familiarity with relevant Australian water quality guidelines and standards.
- Experience with data management software or GIS applications.
- A valid Australian Driver's License.
