Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Picture Framer with a keen focus on fine art to join our dedicated team in Belconnen. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of archival framing techniques, conservation principles, and an exceptional eye for detail and design. You will be responsible for crafting custom frames for a wide array of artworks, from contemporary pieces to delicate historical documents, ensuring their protection, aesthetic enhancement, and longevity. This role requires proficiency in various framing materials and machinery, coupled with outstanding customer service skills to advise clients on the best framing solutions for their cherished pieces.

Key Responsibilities

• Consult with clients to understand their framing needs, offering expert advice on design, materials, and conservation options.
• Measure, cut, join, and finish frames to precise specifications using a variety of materials including wood, metal, and acrylic.
• Mount and hinge artwork using appropriate archival methods, ensuring preservation and stability.
• Cut mats and glass accurately, including specialty glazing for UV protection and non-glare properties.
• Operate and maintain framing machinery, including saws, computerized mat cutters, and joiners.
• Perform minor frame repairs and restoration work when required.
• Manage framing orders from initial consultation to final delivery, ensuring quality control at every stage.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment.
• Contribute to stock management and ordering of framing supplies.

Required Skills

• Minimum of 3 years of professional picture framing experience, with a strong portfolio in fine art framing.
• Expertise in archival framing techniques and conservation best practices.
• Proficiency in operating framing equipment (e.g., mitre saws, joiners, mat cutters).
• Exceptional attention to detail and precision craftsmanship.
• Strong understanding of various framing materials, their properties, and applications.
• Excellent colour sense and design aptitude.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Formal qualification in fine art, design, or a related field.
• Experience with large format or complex framing projects.
• Knowledge of art history and different artistic mediums.
• Familiarity with inventory management systems.
