Job Description

We are seeking a talented and detail-oriented Online Data Journalist to join our innovative team. This fully remote role involves transforming complex datasets into engaging and easy-to-understand visualisations and compelling narratives for our diverse online audience. You will be instrumental in unearthing stories from data, presenting insights in a clear and impactful manner, and contributing to our mission of delivering top-tier data-driven journalism from the comfort of your home.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, acquire, and process data from various sources relevant to news stories and investigations.
  • Clean, analyse, and interpret large datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights.
  • Design and create compelling data visualisations (charts, maps, infographics) using appropriate tools.
  • Write clear, concise, and accurate copy to accompany data visualisations, explaining methodologies and findings.
  • Collaborate closely with editorial teams, reporters, and editors to integrate data journalism into broader stories.
  • Stay updated on data visualisation best practices, tools, and journalistic ethical standards.
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of all data presented and visualised.
  • Contribute to the development of new data-driven storytelling formats.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation.
  • Strong command of data visualisation tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Google Data Studio, D3.js, R/Python for visualisation).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to translate complex data into engaging journalistic content.
  • Solid understanding of journalistic ethics and best practices.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in data journalism, data analysis, or a similar role.
  • Experience with web development technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for interactive visualisations.
  • Familiarity with SQL for database querying.
  • Portfolio showcasing previous data journalism projects and visualisations.
