Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Network Cabling Specialist with a strong focus on fiber optic and data cabling to join our dynamic field team in Broome, Western Australia. This role is critical to maintaining and expanding our telecommunications infrastructure in a vital regional hub. The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of complex network infrastructure, ensuring high-performance and reliable connectivity for our diverse customer base. This position offers top rates for an individual with deep technical expertise, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently or as part of a collaborative team.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, terminate, test, and troubleshoot fiber optic and copper data cabling (CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6A) in various indoor and outdoor environments.
- Perform precise fusion splicing and mechanical termination of single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables.
- Conduct comprehensive testing of network cabling using OTDR, power meters, VFL, and advanced cable certifiers to ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Read and accurately interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical diagrams to determine optimal cable routes and configurations.
- Diagnose and resolve complex cabling issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective, long-term solutions.
- Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, company policies, and industry best practices during all installations and maintenance activities.
- Maintain meticulous records of work performed, including cable runs, test results, material usage, and project progress.
- Collaborate effectively with network engineers, project managers, and other field technicians to ensure timely and successful project completion.
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior technicians, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
- Operate and maintain a variety of specialized tools and equipment safely and efficiently, ensuring their longevity and readiness.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in the installation and maintenance of fiber optic and copper data cabling.
- Expertise in fusion splicing, mechanical termination, and comprehensive testing of single-mode and multi-mode fiber.
- Proficiency with network cabling testing equipment, including OTDRs, power meters, visual fault locators, and cable certifiers.
- Strong understanding of TIA/EIA standards, AS/NZS standards, and best practices for network cabling.
- Ability to accurately read and interpret technical documentation such as blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Excellent problem-solving, diagnostic, and troubleshooting skills for complex cabling issues.
- Valid Australian driver's license with a clean driving record and willingness to travel to various job sites within the region.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to safety and strict adherence to established safety protocols and procedures.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant industry certifications (e.g., FOA CFOT – Certified Fiber Optic Technician, BICSI Installer/Technician).
- Experience with different types of network architecture, hardware, and active equipment.
- Knowledge of local telecommunications regulations and environmental considerations for working in regional and remote Australian environments.
- Experience operating elevated work platforms (EWP) and relevant licenses.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Trade qualification in telecommunications or relevant electrical fields.
