Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Histology Technician to join our Pathology team in Launceston, Tasmania. This role is crucial in supporting our diagnostic services by preparing tissue samples for microscopic examination by pathologists. The successful candidate will perform a variety of histology procedures, including embedding, cutting, staining, and mounting tissue sections, adhering to strict quality control and safety standards. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine histology procedures including grossing assistance, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and routine H&E staining.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as tissue processors, embedding centers, microtomes, and stainers.
- Prepare special stains and immunohistochemistry slides as required.
- Conduct quality control checks on reagents, equipment, and slides.
- Maintain accurate records of all procedures, results, and quality control activities.
- Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols, quality assurance programs, and regulatory guidelines.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to equipment and procedures.
- Assist with inventory management and ordering of supplies.
- Collaborate effectively with pathologists, medical scientists, and other laboratory staff.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in basic histology techniques (embedding, microtomy, staining)
- Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and quality control principles
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS)
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related scientific field
- Certification as a Histology Technician (HT) or equivalent
- Experience with immunohistochemistry (IHC) techniques
- Prior experience in a high-volume diagnostic pathology laboratory
