Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Fisheries Technician with a strong research focus to join our dynamic team. This full-time, on-site position in Vancouver, British Columbia, offers a unique opportunity to contribute to critical scientific research that informs the sustainable management of Canada’s aquatic resources. The successful candidate will play a vital role in both field and laboratory settings, supporting various research projects focused on fish populations, aquatic ecosystems, and environmental impacts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field data collection activities, including fish sampling, water quality monitoring, and habitat assessments in diverse aquatic environments.
  • Perform laboratory analyses such as sample processing, species identification, age determination, and basic chemical analyses.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot a variety of field and laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of research projects, including logistics, experimental setup, and data management.
  • Compile, organize, and perform preliminary analysis of research data using appropriate statistical and scientific software.
  • Provide support in the preparation of technical reports, presentations, and scientific publications.
  • Strictly adhere to all safety protocols and departmental guidelines during field operations and laboratory work.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 24 months of practical experience in aquatic sampling techniques and ecological data collection.
  • Proficiency in relevant laboratory procedures, including sample dissection, microscopy, and data entry.
  • Demonstrated strong skills in data collection, organization, and basic scientific record-keeping.
  • Familiarity with scientific software applications (e.g., Microsoft Excel, R, or similar statistical packages).
  • Ability to work effectively both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A valid provincial driver's license is required for operating departmental vehicles.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform demanding field work in various weather conditions and remote locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries, Marine Biology, Biology, Environmental Science, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Previous experience with small boat operation, trailering, and adherence to marine safety regulations.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software for mapping and spatial data analysis.
  • In-depth knowledge of local and regional Canadian aquatic species, their biology, and habitats.
