Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Court Interpreter to join the Justice Department in Adelaide, South Australia. This critical role involves providing accurate and impartial interpretation services in a legal setting, primarily within courtrooms and other judicial environments. The successful candidate will facilitate clear communication between non-English speaking individuals and legal professionals, ensuring due process and access to justice for all. You will be responsible for interpreting complex legal terminology and nuances with precision, maintaining strict confidentiality, and adhering to professional ethical standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate, impartial, and confidential interpretation services in courtrooms, tribunals, and other legal settings.
  • Interpret spoken language, including legal proceedings, witness testimonies, and client consultations, between English and the target language.
  • Maintain strict adherence to professional ethics, impartiality, and confidentiality standards.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing case materials and familiarising yourself with relevant legal terminology.
  • Collaborate effectively with legal professionals, court staff, and clients to ensure smooth communication.
  • Provide sight translation of documents when required during proceedings.
  • Manage time effectively to attend scheduled hearings and meetings promptly.

Required Skills

  • Fluency in English and at least one other language (written and spoken).
  • NAATI Accreditation (Level Professional Interpreter or higher) for the specific language combination.
  • Demonstrated experience in court or legal interpreting.
  • Exceptional listening, retention, and communication skills.
  • Profound understanding of legal terminology and court procedures.
  • Ability to work under pressure and maintain composure in sensitive situations.
  • Strong ethical framework and commitment to impartiality and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in linguistics, translation, interpreting, or a related field.
  • Additional NAATI accreditations in multiple languages.
  • Prior experience working within a government justice department.
  • Understanding of the Australian legal system and cultural nuances relevant to diverse communities.
