Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Heritage Consultant to join our Planning & Culture team. In this pivotal role, you will provide expert advice on heritage matters, assist with the assessment of development applications, and contribute to the development of heritage strategies and policies across the Tamworth Regional Council area. This position requires a strong understanding of heritage legislation, conservation principles, and the ability to engage effectively with community stakeholders and developers. You will be instrumental in balancing growth with the careful preservation of our rich heritage assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert heritage advice to Council staff, applicants, and the community on development proposals and planning matters.
  • Assess Development Applications (DAs) for heritage impact, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, policies, and guidelines.
  • Prepare heritage impact statements, conservation management plans, and other heritage-related documents.
  • Contribute to the review and development of local heritage studies, strategies, and planning instruments.
  • Conduct site inspections and surveys of heritage items and conservation areas.
  • Liaise with external heritage agencies, consultants, and community groups.
  • Represent Council at meetings, committees, and public presentations on heritage matters.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of heritage legislation, best practice, and industry trends.

Required Skills

  • Tertiary qualification in Heritage, Archaeology, Architecture, Town Planning, History, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in heritage consulting or a similar role, preferably within a local government context.
  • Thorough understanding of NSW heritage legislation, including the Heritage Act 1977 and Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
  • Demonstrated experience in assessing heritage impacts of development proposals.
  • Strong report writing and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to interpret architectural drawings and heritage documentation.
  • Valid Australian Driver's Licence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Membership with relevant professional bodies (e.g., Australia ICOMOS, Planning Institute of Australia).
  • Experience with GIS software and heritage database management.
  • Knowledge of local Aboriginal cultural heritage processes and protocols.
  • Proven ability to negotiate positive heritage outcomes with diverse stakeholders.
