Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate TAFE Student Counselor to join our educational support team in Laverton. In this vital role, you will provide comprehensive counseling and support services to a diverse student body, assisting them with academic, personal, and career-related challenges. You will play a crucial role in promoting student well-being, fostering a positive learning environment, and empowering students to achieve their full potential. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, a deep understanding of student development, and a commitment to inclusive practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide confidential, one-on-one counseling to TAFE students regarding academic performance, personal issues, career planning, and mental health concerns.
  • Conduct intake assessments and develop tailored support plans for students.
  • Refer students to internal support services or external agencies as appropriate.
  • Organise and deliver workshops on topics such as stress management, study skills, time management, and resilience.
  • Collaborate with academic staff, student services, and other departments to ensure integrated student support.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with institutional policies and privacy regulations.
  • Participate in team meetings, professional development, and contribute to the continuous improvement of counseling services.
  • Advocate for students and promote an inclusive and supportive campus culture.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in student counseling or a similar support role, preferably within a vocational or higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide confidential, empathetic, and effective counseling services to a diverse client base.
  • Strong understanding of mental health issues, crisis intervention techniques, and referral pathways.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate digital records and using relevant administrative software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work.
  • Professional registration or membership with a relevant counseling or psychological body (e.g., PACFA, APS).
  • Experience working with TAFE students or young adults from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of the Australian vocational education and training sector.
