Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and culturally aware Aboriginal Education Officer to join our public school system in Wodonga. This vital role involves supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, families, and staff, promoting cultural understanding, and contributing to positive educational outcomes. The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a school environment to implement culturally appropriate programs and strategies that enhance engagement and achievement for Aboriginal students.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct support and mentoring to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to improve their attendance, engagement, and academic achievement.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal families and the broader Aboriginal community, facilitating communication between home and school.
- Assist school staff in developing and implementing culturally inclusive curriculum and teaching practices.
- Organise and facilitate cultural events and activities within the school to promote understanding and celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
- Advocate for the needs of Aboriginal students and contribute to the development of school-based policies and programs related to Aboriginal education.
- Support the professional development of staff in cultural awareness and responsiveness.
- Participate in relevant school and community meetings and committees.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and contemporary issues.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, families, staff, and community members.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Experience in mentoring or supporting young people.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Current Working with Children Check (WWCC) or ability to obtain one.
- Aboriginality or Torres Strait Islander identity (specific measure under Equal Opportunity Act 2010).
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant qualifications in education, community services, or cultural studies.
- Experience working within an educational setting or with young people in a similar capacity.
- Knowledge of local Aboriginal communities and their aspirations.
- Driver's license and access to reliable transport.
