Job Description
Join the Toowoomba Regional Council’s dedicated Parks and Recreation team as a Weed Control Hand. This vital role contributes directly to the beauty and ecological health of our city’s parks, gardens, and public spaces. You will be responsible for the identification and eradication of various weed species, ensuring our green areas remain pristine and accessible for everyone. This position requires a proactive individual with a strong work ethic, a commitment to safety, and a passion for outdoor work within a supportive local council environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and control various weed species in parks, gardens, reserves, and other public land using appropriate methods (manual removal, brush cutting, spraying, etc.).
- Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and light machinery relevant to weed control tasks.
- Prepare and apply herbicides safely and effectively, adhering to all relevant safety data sheets (SDS) and environmental regulations.
- Monitor treated areas for regrowth and conduct follow-up treatments as necessary.
- Assist with general park maintenance tasks, including litter removal, minor landscaping, and site cleanup.
- Adhere strictly to all Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, including areas treated, chemicals used, and hours worked.
- Report equipment malfunctions or hazards to supervisors promptly.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team, contributing to a positive and productive work environment.
Required Skills
- Ability to identify common weed species.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Basic knowledge of safe herbicide handling and application techniques.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Valid Australian Driver's License (Class C).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in horticulture, landscaping, groundskeeping, or weed control.
- Current ACDC (Agricultural Chemical Distribution Control) Licence.
- Experience operating brush cutters, ride-on mowers, and other relevant small machinery.
- First Aid certification.
