Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate and proactive TAFE Student Counselor to join our team in Whyalla. This vital role involves providing comprehensive educational support and personal counseling to TAFE students, helping them navigate their academic journey and personal development. The Student Counselor will be responsible for offering guidance on course selection, study techniques, career pathways, and personal issues that may impact student success. You will work closely with students from diverse backgrounds, ensuring they have the resources and support needed to thrive in their studies and beyond. This role is crucial in maintaining a positive and supportive learning environment at TAFE SA.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling to TAFE students on academic, career, and personal issues.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops on topics such as study skills, stress management, career planning, and personal wellbeing.
  • Refer students to appropriate internal and external support services when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with TAFE SA policies and privacy regulations.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to identify and support students at risk.
  • Advise students on TAFE course structures, pathways, and enrollment processes.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of student support programs and initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in student counseling or educational support roles.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with diverse student populations.
  • Strong understanding of student development theories and counseling methodologies.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in record-keeping and data management.
  • Sound knowledge of the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector in Australia.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Education, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working within a TAFE or university setting.
  • Membership with a relevant professional body (e.g., PACFA, ACA).
  • Experience in crisis intervention and risk assessment.
