Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Stonemason to join our Ballarat team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a variety of significant projects, encompassing both the careful restoration of historic stonework and the precise execution of contemporary stone installations. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional technical ability, an eye for detail, and a deep appreciation for both traditional and modern stonemasonry techniques. You will play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of our heritage sites and shaping the aesthetic of new builds, ensuring the highest standards of quality and durability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute high-quality stonemasonry work for heritage restoration projects, including repair, repointing, carving, and replacement of traditional stone elements.
  • Perform precision cutting, shaping, and installation of natural stone for new commercial and public building projects.
  • Interpret architectural drawings, specifications, and heritage reports to plan and execute work accurately.
  • Select and work with a variety of stone types, including bluestone, granite, sandstone, marble, and others, understanding their properties and best practices.
  • Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring their proper and safe operation.
  • Adhere strictly to all site safety protocols, building codes, and quality assurance standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with project managers, architects, and other tradespeople.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of apprentices and less experienced team members.
  • Perform site preparation, cleanup, and material handling as required.

Required Skills

  • Recognised trade qualification in Stonemasonry or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of post-apprenticeship experience in stonemasonry, with demonstrable experience in both heritage and modern construction.
  • Proficiency in traditional stonemasonry techniques (e.g., lime mortar, dry stone walling, carving, dressing).
  • Expertise in modern stone installation methods and materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and technical specifications accurately.
  • Strong understanding of stone properties, characteristics, and appropriate applications.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination, precision, and attention to detail.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform demanding manual tasks, including lifting and handling heavy materials.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Certificate or Diploma in Building and Construction (Stonemasonry).
  • Experience with specialist tools and machinery used in stonework.
  • Knowledge of local Victorian heritage building regulations and conservation principles.
  • Portfolio demonstrating previous work on heritage restoration or complex modern stone projects.
  • White Card (Construction Induction Card) for working on Australian construction sites.
