Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Waste Management Coordinator to join our Infrastructure Services team. This critical role is responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and coordination of waste management services and infrastructure projects across the East Gippsland Shire. You will play a key part in developing and managing waste reduction strategies, recycling programs, and landfill operations, ensuring compliance with all relevant environmental regulations and local government policies. This position requires strong project management skills, a deep understanding of waste management principles, and the ability to work collaboratively with internal teams, contractors, and community stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and supervise daily waste management operations, including collection, transfer, processing, and disposal.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor waste reduction and recycling programs for the Shire.
  • Manage contracts with external waste service providers and ensure service level agreements are met.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental legislation, regulations, and Council policies.
  • Prepare and manage budgets for waste management services and projects.
  • Conduct site inspections and audits of waste facilities, including landfills and transfer stations.
  • Engage with community members and stakeholders to promote sustainable waste practices and address concerns.
  • Prepare reports, briefs, and presentations for Council and management on waste management performance and initiatives.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities within waste management operations.
  • Oversee waste infrastructure projects, from planning and design to execution and commissioning.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in waste management operations or environmental services.
  • Strong understanding of Australian waste management legislation and environmental regulations.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage contracts and negotiate with suppliers.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Current Australian Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Engineering, Waste Management, or a related field.
  • Experience working within a local government environment.
  • Knowledge of landfill operations and management.
  • Experience with community engagement and education programs.
