Job Description

Are you a passionate and dedicated veterinary student eager to gain invaluable hands-on experience in a vibrant rural practice? Greencross Vets Bathurst is offering a unique student placement opportunity designed to immerse you in the diverse challenges and rewards of rural veterinary medicine. This placement will provide exposure to companion animal care, as well as critical experience with large animals, farm calls, and livestock management. You will work alongside experienced veterinarians, gaining practical skills and insights that are crucial for a successful career in veterinary science, particularly in a regional setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary nurses with daily patient examinations, diagnostics, and treatments.
  • Observe and participate in a wide range of medical and surgical procedures, for both small and large animals.
  • Support with animal handling, restraint, and care during consultations and hospitalisation.
  • Participate in farm calls and equine visits, learning about herd health, preventative medicine, and emergency response.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and assist with clinic administrative tasks as required.
  • Engage actively in case discussions and learning opportunities with the veterinary team.
  • Follow all clinic protocols for hygiene, safety, and animal welfare.
  • Contribute to a positive and supportive team environment.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent program.
  • Demonstrated strong interest in rural and mixed practice veterinary medicine.
  • Basic knowledge of veterinary anatomy, physiology, and common diseases.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team.
  • Comfortable working with a variety of animal species, including large animals.
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed at least two years of a DVM program.
  • Previous experience with animal handling or in an animal care setting (e.g., farm, shelter, clinic).
  • Valid driver's license and own transportation.
