Job Description
Are you a passionate veterinary student eager to gain invaluable practical experience in a vibrant rural setting? Mid Coast Vets invites dedicated students to join our team for a Veterinary Student Placement. This program offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the daily operations of a mixed animal practice, working alongside experienced veterinarians and gaining exposure to a diverse range of cases, from routine farm calls to complex small animal surgeries. This placement is designed to complement your academic learning with real-world challenges and expand your understanding of rural veterinary medicine.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians with examinations, diagnoses, and treatments for both small and large animals.
- Participate in surgical procedures, including preparation, monitoring, and post-operative care.
- Help with animal handling, restraint, and general patient care.
- Conduct laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging under supervision.
- Maintain accurate patient records and contribute to clinic organization.
- Observe and learn about client communication, practice management, and ethical considerations.
- Support farm calls and emergency services as required, gaining exposure to livestock health and management.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program.
- Basic knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.
- Strong commitment to animal welfare and ethical practice.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges.
- Physical stamina for animal handling and assisting in field conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of at least two years of a DVM program.
- Previous experience with animal handling or farm work.
- Familiarity with rural environments and agricultural practices.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license (desirable for potential farm visits).
