Job Description

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is seeking a motivated Soil Science Assistant to join our dedicated team in Hervey Bay. In this essential role, you will provide critical support to soil scientists and researchers, assisting with fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and data management. Key Responsibilities
- Assist soil scientists in planning and conducting field surveys and sampling activities across diverse agricultural landscapes.
- Collect, label, and transport soil samples according to established protocols and safety guidelines.
- Perform routine laboratory analyses on soil samples, including pH, nutrient content, organic matter, and texture analysis.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, ensuring accuracy and reliability of results.
- Accurately record and manage field and laboratory data, contributing to research databases.
- Prepare reports, summaries, and presentations under the guidance of senior scientists.
- Adhere to all workplace health and safety procedures and environmental regulations.
- Contribute to the general maintenance and tidiness of the laboratory and field equipment.
Required Skills
- Basic understanding of soil science principles or environmental science.
- Proficiency in data entry and basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently or as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and analysis.
- Good physical fitness for fieldwork, including lifting and carrying equipment.
- Valid Australian driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, or a related field.
- Previous experience in a laboratory or field setting, particularly with soil sampling or analysis.
- Familiarity with GIS software or data analysis tools.
- Knowledge of Queensland agricultural practices or environmental regulations.
