Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Radiation Safety Officer to join our team in Newman, Western Australia. In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe use, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials and radiation-generating apparatus across our industrial operations. You will develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive radiation safety programs, conduct risk assessments, provide expert advice, and ensure full compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements and company policies. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the site's Radiation Management Plan and associated procedures.
  • Conduct regular radiation surveys, inspections, and audits of radiation sources and associated equipment.
  • Manage the inventory, storage, transfer, and disposal of all radioactive materials and apparatus.
  • Ensure all personnel working with or near radiation sources receive appropriate training and are aware of safety protocols.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on radiation safety matters to management and operational teams.
  • Investigate and report on all radiation-related incidents, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies (e.g., Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety – DMIRS) on all radiation safety matters.
  • Monitor and assess occupational exposure to radiation, maintaining accurate records.
  • Procure and maintain radiation monitoring equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Conduct risk assessments for new or modified processes involving radiation sources.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, or a related field with a focus on radiation physics or nuclear technology.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Radiation Safety Officer in an industrial or mining environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of Australian radiation safety legislation and standards, particularly in Western Australia (e.g., Radiation Safety Act 1975).
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing Radiation Management Plans.
  • Strong understanding of various radiation sources, their hazards, and control measures.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and training skills.
  • Ability to conduct thorough investigations and analytical problem-solving.
  • Proficiency in risk assessment methodologies.
  • Valid Australian driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Radiation Safety or Health Physics.
  • Certification as a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) from a recognised body.
  • Experience with NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) management.
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Previous experience in a FIFO (Fly-in, Fly-out) environment.
