Job Description

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented School Laboratory Technician to join our Science Department. This crucial role involves supporting teachers and students across various science disciplines by preparing and setting up experiments, maintaining laboratory equipment, managing stock, and ensuring a safe and engaging learning environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and a passion for supporting science education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and set up practical experiments and demonstrations for chemistry, biology, physics, and other science subjects.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring all apparatus is in good working order, calibrated, and cleaned.
  • Manage and organize chemical and equipment stock, including ordering, receiving, storing, and disposing of materials in accordance with safety guidelines.
  • Ensure all laboratory spaces comply with health and safety regulations, conducting regular checks and risk assessments.
  • Assist teachers and students during practical sessions, providing technical support and guidance as needed.
  • Provide first aid for minor lab-related incidents and ensure emergency procedures are known and practiced.
  • Contribute to the development and updating of laboratory resources and teaching materials.
  • Oversee the proper waste disposal of chemicals and other hazardous materials.
  • Liaise with external suppliers and contractors for equipment maintenance and chemical supply.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in laboratory techniques and equipment operation across science disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics).
  • Thorough understanding and adherence to laboratory health and safety regulations.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with teachers and students.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer literacy for record-keeping and inventory management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A relevant diploma or degree in Science, Laboratory Technology, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working as a Laboratory Technician, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain one).
