Job Description
We are seeking a talented and passionate Online Data Journalist to join our dynamic remote team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for sourcing, analyzing, and visualizing complex data sets to create engaging, informative, and impactful stories for our online audience. You will transform raw data into clear, compelling narratives and interactive graphics, helping our readers understand critical issues and trends. This role requires a keen eye for detail, strong analytical skills, and a proven ability to communicate complex information effectively through visual storytelling. You will work independently from home, collaborating virtually with editors, reporters, and designers to produce high-quality data-driven content.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify compelling stories and angles within large, complex datasets.
- Clean, process, and analyze data using appropriate tools and statistical methods.
- Design and develop engaging, interactive data visualizations (charts, maps, infographics) for web and mobile platforms.
- Write clear, concise, and accurate copy to accompany data visualizations.
- Collaborate with editorial teams to integrate data insights into broader news coverage.
- Ensure accuracy, integrity, and ethical handling of all data.
- Stay informed about the latest trends in data journalism, visualization tools, and data sources.
- Participate in virtual team meetings and contribute to brainstorming sessions.
- Meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in data analysis and visualization.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, R, Python with libraries like Pandas/Matplotlib/Seaborn).
- Experience with data visualization libraries/tools (e.g., D3.js, Tableau, Flourish, Datawrapper).
- Strong journalistic judgment and storytelling ability.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, or a related field.
- Experience working in a newsroom or digital media environment.
- Familiarity with web development technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for interactive storytelling.
- Knowledge of SQL databases and geospatial data.
