Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Assistant Microbiologist to join our dynamic research team in Katherine, Northern Territory. This entry-level to early-career position is ideal for a recent graduate or individual with foundational laboratory experience looking to develop their skills in a world-leading scientific environment. The successful candidate will provide essential support to senior microbiologists, contributing to critical research projects focused on environmental, agricultural, or animal health microbiology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare culture media, reagents, and sterile equipment for microbiological experiments.
  • Assist with the collection, processing, and storage of environmental, biological, and clinical samples.
  • Perform basic microbiological techniques including culturing, plating, and enumeration of microorganisms.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as autoclaves, incubators, microscopes, and spectrophotometers.
  • Conduct basic microscopic examination and identification of microorganisms.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records, including data entry and preliminary analysis.
  • Adhere strictly to laboratory safety protocols and quality control procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations.
  • Manage laboratory inventory and assist with ordering supplies.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Biotechnology, or a related scientific field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of fundamental microbiological principles and laboratory techniques.
  • Proficiency in aseptic techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow complex protocols and standard operating procedures accurately.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous practical experience in a research or diagnostic microbiology laboratory (academic or industrial).
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, DNA extraction).
  • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
  • Knowledge of Australian environmental or agricultural microbiology.
  • Valid driver's license.
