Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Government Information Officer to join our Public Access team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for managing and processing requests for government information under relevant legislation, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, and promoting transparency within government operations. This position requires strong analytical skills, a thorough understanding of information access principles, and excellent communication abilities to engage with internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and respond to requests for government information in accordance with the Right to Information Act 2009 (Tasmania) and other relevant legislation.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to government agencies, staff, and the public on information access matters.
  • Conduct thorough searches and consultations to identify relevant documents and determine appropriate disclosure decisions.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports, correspondence, and documentation related to information access requests.
  • Maintain accurate records and databases of information requests and decisions.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to information management and public access.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including applicants, legal representatives, and other government bodies.
  • Stay current with legislative changes and best practices in government information management and public access.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated understanding of information access legislation, particularly the Right to Information Act 2009 (Tasmania).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex information clearly.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks, priorities, and deadlines effectively.
  • High level of integrity and discretion when handling sensitive and confidential information.
  • Proficiency in using information management systems and standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Law, Public Administration, Information Management, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a government or public sector environment.
  • Knowledge of administrative law principles.
  • Familiarity with recordkeeping standards and practices.
