Job Description

Join our dedicated team as a Fisheries Officer (Assistant) and contribute to the vital environmental protection of Queensland’s aquatic resources. This entry-level position offers an exciting opportunity to work alongside experienced officers, supporting the monitoring, compliance, and conservation efforts that safeguard our fisheries and marine environments. You will assist in field operations, data collection, community engagement, and the enforcement of fisheries regulations to promote sustainable practices and protect biodiversity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior Fisheries Officers in routine field patrols, surveillance, and inspections of fishing activities (commercial and recreational).
  • Collect and record data related to fisheries catches, environmental conditions, and compliance observations.
  • Participate in educational and community engagement programs to promote awareness of fisheries regulations and conservation.
  • Support the investigation of reported breaches of fisheries legislation, including data gathering and initial documentation.
  • Operate and maintain departmental equipment, including vessels, vehicles, and specialized sampling gear.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, report writing, and data entry related to field operations and compliance activities.
  • Contribute to the implementation of environmental protection strategies within the fisheries sector.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and procedures during all field and office-based duties.

Required Skills

  • Strong interest in environmental protection, marine biology, or fisheries management.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of interacting with diverse stakeholders.
  • Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in various outdoor conditions, including on vessels and remote areas.
  • Valid Australian Driver's Licence (manual preferred).
  • Ability to follow instructions and departmental procedures meticulously.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed or currently pursuing a Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in Fisheries Management, Marine Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in a field-based role, particularly in environmental monitoring or outdoor work.
  • Knowledge of Queensland's fisheries legislation and marine ecosystems.
  • Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal or higher qualification (or willingness to obtain).
