Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated Environmental Health Officer with a strong focus on council compliance to join our dynamic Public Health and Safety team. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in protecting public health and safeguarding the environment across the Fraser Coast region. You will primarily be responsible for ensuring compliance with a range of environmental and public health legislation, by-laws, and policies through proactive inspections, investigations, and community engagement. This role offers the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the well-being of our community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting routine and reactive inspections of food businesses, public swimming pools, licensed premises, and other regulated facilities to ensure compliance with environmental health standards.
  • Investigating complaints relating to public health nuisances, environmental pollution, food safety breaches, and other regulatory matters.
  • Enforcing relevant legislation, by-laws, and local laws through the issuance of notices, orders, and participation in legal proceedings where necessary.
  • Providing expert advice and education to businesses, residents, and community groups on environmental health matters and compliance requirements.
  • Developing and implementing public health programs and initiatives.
  • Preparing detailed reports, correspondence, and technical assessments.
  • Collaborating with internal departments, external agencies, and stakeholders to achieve compliance outcomes.
  • Responding to public health emergencies and incidents as required.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Health or a related field recognized by Environmental Health Australia (EHA).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant environmental health legislation, including the Food Act, Public Health Act, and local government legislation.
  • Proven experience in conducting inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and public speaking.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a focus on practical solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Valid Queensland Driver's Licence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working within a local government environment.
  • Membership with Environmental Health Australia (EHA).
  • Experience with environmental management systems or compliance software.
  • Specific training or certification in areas such as food safety auditing or contaminated land management.
