Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and proactive Environmental Health Assistant to join our Food & Safety team. This role is crucial in supporting our Environmental Health Officers in ensuring food safety, public health compliance, and environmental protection across the Bundaberg region. You will assist with inspections, investigations, and educational initiatives, contributing directly to the health and safety of our community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of food premises under supervision, ensuring compliance with food safety standards.
  • Assist Environmental Health Officers with complex investigations into foodborne illnesses, public health complaints, and environmental hazards.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to inspections and investigations.
  • Provide information and advice to businesses and the public on food safety practices and relevant regulations.
  • Participate in educational campaigns and community engagement activities related to public health and food safety.
  • Monitor and respond to minor environmental health inquiries and concerns.
  • Assist with data collection and analysis for various environmental health programs.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment used for environmental monitoring and testing.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate compliance and address public health issues.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated understanding of food safety principles and relevant legislation (e.g., Food Standards Code).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Proficiency in using standard office software (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid Queensland Driver's Licence.
  • Ability to conduct site visits and inspections, which may involve physical activity and outdoor work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma or Certificate IV in Environmental Health, Food Science, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience in an environmental health, food safety, or regulatory compliance role.
  • Knowledge of local government operations and processes.
  • Familiarity with the Bundaberg region and its community.
