Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Bookbinding Lead to join our specialty publishing team. In this pivotal role, you will oversee all aspects of our in-house bookbinding operations for limited editions, bespoke projects, and high-quality artistic publications. You will be responsible for the meticulous execution of various binding techniques, ensuring the highest standards of craftsmanship, quality, and timely delivery. This role requires a deep understanding of traditional and contemporary bookbinding methods, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to lead and mentor a small team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and execute all specialty bookbinding projects from conception to completion.
  • Operate and maintain a range of bookbinding equipment and tools.
  • Implement various binding techniques including perfect binding, case binding, saddle stitching, and more intricate hand-binding methods.
  • Ensure all finished products meet stringent quality control standards and design specifications.
  • Train and supervise junior bookbinders or assistants, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous learning.
  • Collaborate closely with design, editorial, and production teams to achieve desired aesthetic and structural outcomes.
  • Manage inventory of binding materials, including paper, cloth, leather, adhesives, and tools.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and optimize binding processes for efficiency and quality.
  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment in compliance with all safety regulations.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in bookbinding, with a focus on specialty or fine art binding.
  • Proficiency in a wide range of bookbinding techniques and equipment operation.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality craftsmanship.
  • Strong understanding of materials used in bookbinding (papers, boards, cloths, leathers, adhesives).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Proven leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal qualification in bookbinding, print production, or a related field.
  • Experience with historical or archival binding techniques.
  • Knowledge of print finishing processes beyond binding.
  • Experience in a publishing house environment.
  • A portfolio showcasing diverse bookbinding projects.
