Job Description

Are you an aspiring Electrical Engineer eager to gain hands-on experience in large-scale industrial projects? Rio Tinto is offering an exciting Internship opportunity for an Electrical Cadet to join our Major Projects team in Esperance, Western Australia. This role is designed for students currently pursuing an Electrical Engineering degree who are looking to apply their theoretical knowledge in a dynamic, real-world environment. You will work alongside experienced engineers, contributing to critical electrical infrastructure planning, design, and implementation within our mining and resource operations. This internship provides invaluable exposure to complex electrical systems, project lifecycle management, and safety protocols in a leading global resources company. This is an on-site position, offering direct engagement with our operational teams and project sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior Electrical Engineers in the design, planning, and execution of electrical systems for major projects.
  • Participate in site visits and inspections to gather data, assess equipment, and monitor project progress.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation, including drawings, specifications, and reports.
  • Support in troubleshooting electrical issues and performing root cause analysis.
  • Contribute to safety audits and ensure compliance with industry standards and company policies.
  • Learn and apply project management methodologies relevant to large-scale engineering endeavors.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, civil, and operations personnel.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of electrical engineering principles, circuit theory, and power systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated eagerness to learn and a proactive attitude towards challenges.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks Electrical).
  • Prior exposure to industrial control systems (PLC, SCADA) or high-voltage power distribution.
  • A strong interest in the mining and resources sector or heavy industrial projects.
  • Knowledge of relevant Australian electrical standards and regulations.
