Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive School Grounds Caretaker to join our Facilities team. This vital role involves maintaining the college’s extensive grounds to a high standard, ensuring a safe, clean, and attractive environment for all members of the college community. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, from groundskeeping and gardening to performing minor repairs and general maintenance across the campus. This is an on-site, full-time position that requires a hands-on approach and a strong commitment to health and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine grounds maintenance, including mowing lawns, pruning shrubs, weeding, and tending to flower beds.
- Carry out minor repairs and general maintenance tasks on buildings and grounds infrastructure (e.g., fencing, pathways, outdoor furniture).
- Ensure the security of the college premises, including locking/unlocking gates and buildings as required.
- Monitor and maintain cleanliness of external areas, including litter picking and waste management.
- Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment safely and effectively.
- Assist with setting up for college events and activities as needed.
- Identify and report major repair requirements or safety hazards to the Facilities Manager.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations and college policies.
Required Skills
- Proven practical experience in grounds maintenance and general repairs.
- Ability to operate various groundskeeping machinery (e.g., mowers, strimmers).
- Basic understanding of building maintenance and repair techniques.
- Strong commitment to health and safety practices.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform manual tasks outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant vocational qualification in horticulture, groundskeeping, or a related field.
- Full UK driving license.
- Experience working in an educational or similar institutional setting.
- Basic IT literacy for reporting and communication.
