Job Description

The Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is seeking a diligent and detail-oriented Meat Inspector to join our team in Mount Isa. This crucial role involves ensuring compliance with national and state food safety regulations within meat processing facilities. You will be responsible for conducting thorough inspections, identifying potential hazards, and upholding the highest standards of public health and animal welfare. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections of livestock and carcasses.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and standards (e.g., Australian Standards for the Hygienic Production and Transportation of Meat).
  • Identify and report non-compliance, unhygienic practices, or animal welfare issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, findings, and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with processing plant management and staff to implement necessary improvements.
  • Provide expert advice on food safety and hygiene protocols.
  • Participate in investigations related to food safety incidents.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of meat hygiene and food safety principles.
  • Ability to apply relevant legislation and standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Food Science, Veterinary Science, or a related field.

  • Understanding of animal welfare principles in a processing environment.
  • Driver's license.
