Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Marine Engineer (Class 3) to join our dynamic team, focusing on coastal shipping operations out of Port Melbourne. This role offers an exceptional opportunity for a qualified engineer to contribute to critical maritime logistics, ensuring the optimal performance and maintenance of our modern fleet. Key Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee the efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of all main and auxiliary machinery on board vessels.
- Perform regular inspections, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues, and implement effective solutions.
- Ensure strict compliance with all national and international maritime regulations, safety protocols, and company policies.
- Maintain accurate records of machinery performance, fuel consumption, maintenance activities, and inventory.
- Lead and mentor junior engineering staff, promoting a culture of safety and technical excellence.
- Collaborate with the Master and other crew members to ensure seamless vessel operations and swift turnaround times.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement preventative measures to mitigate potential operational hazards.
- Manage spare parts inventory and coordinate with shore-based teams for procurement and logistics.
- Participate in planned maintenance systems and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for engineering processes.
Required Skills
- Marine Engineer Class 3 Certificate of Competency (STCW A-III/2 or equivalent)
- Minimum 3 years of seagoing experience as a qualified engineer, preferably in coastal shipping or tug operations.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing marine diesel engines, generators, and auxiliary systems.
- Strong understanding of marine electrical systems, hydraulics, and pneumatic controls.
- Thorough knowledge of maritime safety regulations (ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL) and environmental compliance.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and decision-making skills under pressure.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate clearly with diverse crew members.
- Proficiency in using maintenance management software and basic computer applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) or Tractor tug propulsion systems.
- Additional specialized training or certifications (e.g., High Voltage, DP Maintenance).
- Leadership experience in an engineering team onboard a vessel.
- Familiarity with Australian coastal shipping routes and port operations.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional development.
