Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Library Assistant to join our team at the Kalgoorlie Public Library. This part-time role is ideal for individuals who thrive in a quiet, organized environment and are passionate about supporting community access to information and resources. You will play a crucial role in the daily operations of the library, assisting patrons, managing collections, and ensuring a welcoming atmosphere. We value individuals who are reliable, possess excellent communication skills, and are comfortable working independently as well as part of a supportive team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist library patrons with inquiries, locating materials, and using library services (e.g., computers, printers).
  • Process new library materials, including cataloguing, covering, and shelving books and other media.
  • Maintain the organization and tidiness of library shelves and public areas.
  • Handle circulation desk duties, including checking materials in and out, managing reservations, and collecting overdue fees.
  • Support library programs and events, including setup and takedown.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as answering phones, responding to emails, and maintaining records.
  • Contribute to a positive and quiet library environment for patrons and staff.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn library management software
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • A genuine interest in literature, learning, and community service

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a library, retail, or customer service role
  • Experience with library specific software (e.g., Spydus, Millennium)
  • Tertiary qualification in Library and Information Services or related field
