Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and passionate Hydroponic Manager to oversee our cutting-edge hydroponic facility in Geelong. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day operations, ensuring optimal growth conditions, crop health, and yield maximisation for a variety of specialty crops. This role requires a hands-on approach, strong leadership skills, and a deep understanding of hydroponic systems and modern agricultural techniques.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise all daily hydroponic operations, including nutrient solution management, irrigation, climate control, and pest/disease management.
- Develop and implement detailed crop schedules, ensuring optimal growing conditions for various hydroponic crops.
- Monitor plant health, growth, and yield, making data-driven adjustments to environmental controls and nutrient delivery.
- Lead, train, and mentor a team of hydroponic technicians and farmhands.
- Maintain strict adherence to food safety standards, quality control protocols, and occupational health and safety regulations.
- Operate and maintain sophisticated hydroponic equipment and automation systems.
- Conduct regular inspections, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance on all systems.
- Manage inventory of growing supplies, nutrients, and equipment.
- Analyse production data to identify areas for improvement and implement efficiency enhancements.
- Collaborate with R&D teams on new crop trials and system optimisation.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in commercial hydroponic or controlled environment agriculture (CEA) operations.
- Proven experience in managing a team.
- Strong knowledge of plant physiology, nutrient management, pest and disease identification, and biological control.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining hydroponic systems (e.g., NFT, DWC, substrate-based).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Science, or a related field.
- Experience with advanced climate control software and automation systems.
- Familiarity with Lean principles or other operational efficiency methodologies.
- First Aid certification.
