Job Description
Amnesty International Australia is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Human Rights Support – Public Policy Assistant to join our dynamic team in Penrith, New South Wales. This pivotal role involves providing comprehensive administrative and research support to our Public Policy and Advocacy team, contributing directly to our campaigns for justice and human rights. The successful candidate will assist in monitoring human rights developments, preparing policy briefs, coordinating advocacy efforts, and engaging with stakeholders to influence public policy. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research on human rights issues, public policy, and legislative developments relevant to Amnesty International's campaigns.
- Assist in drafting policy briefs, submissions, reports, and other advocacy materials for various stakeholders.
- Support the coordination of meetings, events, and consultations with government officials, civil society partners, and other key stakeholders.
- Monitor media and political discourse to identify opportunities for advocacy and public engagement.
- Maintain and update databases of contacts, policy documents, and research materials, ensuring accuracy and accessibility.
- Provide administrative support to the Public Policy and Advocacy team, including scheduling, correspondence, and travel arrangements.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of advocacy strategies and campaigns, both locally and nationally.
- Help prepare presentations and communication materials for internal and external audiences, including public awareness campaigns.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Human Rights, Political Science, Law, International Relations, or a related field.
- Proven research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and present findings clearly.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, capable of drafting compelling advocacy materials.
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights principles and values.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a diverse and multicultural team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a public policy, advocacy, or human rights organization is highly regarded.
- Understanding of the Australian political landscape, parliamentary processes, and legislative frameworks.
- Experience in stakeholder engagement or coalition building with civil society organizations or government bodies.
- Knowledge of digital advocacy tools and social media for campaigning and public outreach.
- Fluency in an additional language relevant to Amnesty International's global work.
