Job Description

We are seeking a proactive and skilled Government Liaison Officer to join our team in Bathurst. In this critical role, you will be the primary point of contact between Telstra and various local, state, and federal government agencies, regulators, and industry bodies. Your focus will be on fostering strong relationships, communicating Telstra’s positions on policy and regulatory matters, and ensuring our operations align with legislative requirements. You will monitor legislative developments, prepare briefs, and represent Telstra at relevant meetings and forums, particularly concerning communication infrastructure and services in regional areas. This role demands excellent communication skills, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of government processes and telecommunications policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain strong, productive relationships with key government officials, policymakers, and their staff at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory developments impacting the telecommunications industry, specifically in the Bathurst region and broader NSW.
  • Prepare comprehensive briefs, reports, and presentations for internal stakeholders on government policies, programs, and initiatives.
  • Represent Telstra at government meetings, workshops, public hearings, and industry forums.
  • Advocate for Telstra's interests and communicate our policy positions effectively to government stakeholders.
  • Facilitate communication channels between Telstra's internal departments and relevant government bodies to ensure smooth project execution and compliance.
  • Provide strategic advice to Telstra leadership on government relations strategies and potential policy risks or opportunities.
  • Support the development and implementation of community engagement initiatives in collaboration with government partners.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in government relations, public policy, communications, or a similar role.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Australian government structures, legislative processes, and public policy development.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex information clearly and persuasively.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret legislation, policy documents, and data.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid Australian driver's license and willingness to travel as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Relations, Communications, Law, or a related field.
  • Experience within the telecommunications industry or a highly regulated sector.
  • Familiarity with regional economic development and infrastructure policy.
  • Prior experience working with or within NSW government agencies.
