Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Curator Assistant to join our dynamic team at the National Gallery of Victoria. This role provides essential support to the curatorial department, contributing to the research, development, and execution of exhibitions and collection management. The ideal candidate will have a passion for art and museum practices, excellent organizational skills, and a proactive approach to supporting curatorial initiatives. Key Responsibilities
- Assist Curators with research for exhibitions, publications, and collection development.
- Prepare and organize exhibition materials, including labels, catalogue entries, and didactic texts.
- Coordinate logistics for artwork movement, including packing, shipping, and installation.
- Maintain and update collection records and databases with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Support the development and implementation of public programs and educational initiatives related to exhibitions.
- Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding artworks and collections.
- Assist with administrative tasks for the curatorial department, including scheduling meetings and managing correspondence.
- Liaise with artists, lenders, conservators, and other internal and external stakeholders.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Art History, Museum Studies, Curatorial Studies, or a related field.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a gallery, museum, or cultural institution.
- Demonstrated research and writing skills.
- Proficiency in collection management software (e.g., TMS) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Experience with exhibition preparation and installation.
- Knowledge of conservation principles and art handling best practices.
- Fluency in a second language (especially relevant to international collections).
