Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Cattle Yard Assistant to join our team in Glenorchy, Tasmania. This is a hands-on role perfect for individuals with a genuine passion for livestock and a commitment to animal welfare. As a Cattle Yard Assistant, you will be crucial to the daily operations of our cattle yards, ensuring the health, safety, and efficient movement of our livestock. We value hard work, reliability, and a proactive approach. This full-time position comes with the benefit of food provided on-site.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the daily feeding and watering of cattle.
- Handle and move cattle safely and humanely between pens and processing areas.
- Monitor livestock for signs of illness, injury, or distress and report findings promptly.
- Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of cattle yards, pens, and equipment.
- Operate various farm machinery and equipment, including tractors and forklifts (if licensed).
- Assist with routine animal health treatments and vaccinations.
- Contribute to record-keeping related to cattle movements, treatments, and feed consumption.
- Adhere strictly to all animal welfare, health and safety, and environmental guidelines.
Required Skills
- Minimum 1 year of proven experience in livestock handling, particularly with cattle.
- Strong understanding of animal welfare principles and humane handling techniques.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow instructions.
- Physically fit and able to perform demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
- Reliable, punctual, and possess a strong work ethic.
- Basic communication skills to interact with team members.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current forklift license and experience operating heavy machinery.
- Prior experience working in a feedlot or abattoir environment.
- Basic knowledge of cattle health and common ailments.
- Valid driver's license.
