Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Bookbinder to join our team, specialising in traditional craft techniques. This pivotal role involves the conservation, restoration, and creation of bound materials within our extensive collection. The successful candidate will apply their deep knowledge of historical binding methods, material science, and meticulous craftsmanship to ensure the longevity and beauty of our rare books and documents. Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive conservation and restoration treatments on a variety of bound materials, including rare books, manuscripts, and archival documents.
- Utilize traditional bookbinding techniques, materials, and tools for repair, rebinding, and new binding projects.
- Assess the condition of items, identify deterioration, and recommend appropriate conservation strategies.
- Prepare detailed documentation of treatment procedures, materials used, and item condition.
- Advise on environmental controls and handling best practices for collection care.
- Collaborate with conservators, archivists, and librarians on special projects and exhibitions.
- Maintain a well-organized and safe bindery workshop, including tool maintenance and inventory management.
- Stay abreast of best practices and advancements in book conservation and traditional crafts.
Required Skills
- Proven expertise in traditional bookbinding techniques (e.g., full leather binding, half leather binding, cloth binding, paper binding).
- In-depth knowledge of historical binding structures and materials, including paper, parchment, leather, and textiles.
- Exceptional manual dexterity, precision, and attention to detail.
- Strong understanding of conservation ethics and principles.
- Ability to diagnose material deterioration and execute appropriate treatments.
- Proficiency with traditional bookbinding tools and equipment.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and an artistic eye.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal qualification in bookbinding, book conservation, or a related craft discipline.
- Experience working with archival or heritage collections.
- Knowledge of digital imaging and documentation techniques for conservation purposes.
- Familiarity with various historical lettering and tooling techniques.
- Experience in training or mentoring junior bookbinders.
