Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced APS6 Policy Officer to join our strategic policy team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of critical government policies that have a direct impact on the lives of Australians. Working within a fast-paced and collaborative environment, you will play a key role in research, analysis, and drafting of policy advice for senior leadership and ministers. This position offers flexible working arrangements, including the option to work from home, making it accessible from anywhere in Australia, with a base attachment to our Broome office for administrative purposes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive research and analysis on complex policy issues, identifying emerging trends and potential impacts.
  • Develop and draft high-quality policy advice, briefings, submissions, and other strategic documents for diverse audiences.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including other government agencies, community groups, and industry partners, to gather insights and build consensus.
  • Contribute to the review and evaluation of existing policies and programs, recommending improvements based on evidence.
  • Support the preparation of ministerial correspondence, speeches, and other communications materials.
  • Represent the agency in inter-departmental working groups and forums, advocating for agency priorities.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, government priorities, and contemporary policy best practices.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in policy development, analysis, and implementation within a government or public sector environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities, capable of synthesising information from various sources.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, work to tight deadlines, and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Economics, Law, Social Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with Australian federal or state government frameworks and processes.
  • Knowledge of digital service delivery or social welfare policy areas.
  • Experience working in a remote or hybrid work model previously.
