Job Description

The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre Cafe is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Apprentice Cook to join our dynamic kitchen team. This entry-level full-time position offers comprehensive hands-on training and mentorship, providing you with the essential skills and knowledge to become a professional chef. You will learn all aspects of kitchen operations, from food preparation and cooking techniques to hygiene standards and inventory management, all within a supportive and fast-paced environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior chefs with food preparation, including chopping vegetables, preparing meats, and portioning ingredients.
  • Learn and execute various cooking methods under supervision.
  • Maintain a clean and organised work station, adhering to strict food safety and hygiene standards.
  • Assist with inventory management, stock rotation, and receiving deliveries.
  • Support the kitchen team during service, ensuring timely and high-quality meal delivery.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development programs.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative kitchen environment.

Required Skills

  • Strong passion for cooking and the food industry.
  • Willingness to learn and take direction.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Basic understanding of kitchen operations (or eagerness to learn quickly).
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 15kg.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous casual experience in a kitchen or hospitality setting (e.g., dishwashing, food runner).
  • Completion of a high school certificate or equivalent.
  • A current Food Handler's Certificate (or willingness to obtain one).
