Job Description
The Australian Bureau of Statistics is seeking dedicated and detail-oriented ABS Survey Officers to join our Field Research Assistance team in Grafton, New South Wales. This vital role involves directly engaging with households and businesses to collect accurate statistical data that underpins national policy and economic understanding. As a Survey Officer, you will be the face of the ABS, conducting interviews, verifying information, and ensuring the integrity of our data collection processes in the field. This position requires excellent communication skills, a commitment to accuracy, and the ability to work independently within a defined geographical area. You will receive comprehensive training and ongoing support to excel in this crucial public service role.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct face-to-face interviews with selected households and businesses in accordance with ABS guidelines and privacy protocols.
- Accurately record and verify data using provided electronic devices (e.g., tablets).
- Explain the purpose and importance of ABS surveys to respondents clearly and courteously.
- Maintain confidentiality and security of all collected information.
- Manage and organise fieldwork assignments efficiently, adhering to strict deadlines.
- Resolve respondent queries and address concerns professionally.
- Liaise with team leaders and supervisors to report progress, challenges, and fieldwork outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with all ABS policies and procedures, including WHS guidelines.
Required Skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport quickly.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to data accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a field-based environment.
- Proficiency in using electronic devices (tablets/smartphones) for data entry.
- Resilience and adaptability when interacting with diverse members of the public.
- Valid Australian Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Australian Citizenship or permanent residency.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in survey interviewing, market research, or data collection.
- Experience working in a field-based role.
- Knowledge of the Grafton and surrounding New South Wales regional area.
- A demonstrated interest in contributing to public service and national statistics.
