Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Welfare Officer to join our student support services team at James Cook University in Townsville. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in providing support, guidance, and advocacy for students experiencing personal, academic, or welfare-related challenges. This position requires a proactive individual with excellent interpersonal skills, a strong understanding of student welfare issues, and a commitment to promoting a positive and inclusive university experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide confidential advice, support, and advocacy to students on a range of welfare issues, including mental health, accommodation, financial hardship, academic stress, and personal difficulties.
- Conduct initial assessments of student needs and refer students to appropriate internal and external support services.
- Develop and deliver welfare-focused workshops, presentations, and resources for students.
- Collaborate with university departments, faculty, and external agencies to ensure holistic student support.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and support provided.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of student welfare policies and procedures.
- Participate in student orientation programs and welfare-related events.
- Respond to critical incidents and emergencies affecting student welfare, as required.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated experience in a welfare, support, or counselling role, preferably within an educational setting.
- Strong understanding of student welfare issues and mental health first aid principles.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
- Ability to exercise discretion, empathy, and maintain strict confidentiality.
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Effective problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite and student management systems.
- Current Working with Children Check (Blue Card) or ability to obtain one.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, Education, or a related field.
- Experience working with diverse student populations, including international students and students from regional/remote areas.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and policies pertaining to student welfare and higher education in Australia.
