Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and physically fit Civil Pipe Layer Assistant to join our dynamic team on ongoing infrastructure projects across Melbourne. This role is crucial in supporting our skilled pipe layers, ensuring efficient and safe installation of various pipe systems for water, drainage, and utilities. You will gain hands-on experience in a supportive environment, contributing to essential infrastructure development that serves our communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior pipe layers with the accurate laying and jointing of pipes according to specifications and plans.
  • Operate hand and power tools safely and effectively, including trench compactors, pipe cutters, and levels.
  • Prepare trenches, including ensuring proper depth, grade, and stability.
  • Handle and move pipes, fittings, and other materials on-site.
  • Maintain a clean and organised work site, adhering to all safety protocols and environmental regulations.
  • Support excavation and backfilling activities.
  • Perform general labouring tasks as required to support project progress.
  • Learn and apply best practices for pipe installation, trenching, and site safety.
  • Report any safety concerns or issues to the site supervisor immediately.

Required Skills

  • Previous experience (at least 1 year) in civil construction or a similar outdoor labouring role.
  • Basic understanding of trenching and excavation safety.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic site plans and specifications is a plus.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform manual labour in various weather conditions.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and compliance with OHS guidelines.
  • Valid Australian driver's license and reliable transport.
  • Current White Card (Construction Induction Card).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with various pipe materials (PVC, concrete, ductile iron).
  • First Aid certification.
  • Experience operating small plant equipment (e.g., compaction equipment, cut-off saws).
  • Relevant vocational training or certifications in civil construction.
