Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Cattle Yard Assistant to join our team in Bendigo. This role is crucial for the efficient and humane handling of livestock within our yards. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring animal welfare, maintaining yard hygiene, and supporting general operational activities. Key Responsibilities

  • Safely and efficiently move and handle cattle according to established animal welfare protocols.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of livestock from trucks.
  • Monitor animal health and report any signs of illness or injury to supervisors.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of cattle yards, pens, and equipment.
  • Operate basic machinery (e.g., tractors, forklifts) for feed distribution or yard maintenance, if certified.
  • Assist with feeding and watering routines.
  • Perform general maintenance tasks around the yard, including fence repairs and equipment upkeep.
  • Maintain accurate records of livestock movements and treatments.
  • Adhere to all WHS (Work Health and Safety) policies and procedures.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in livestock handling, particularly with cattle.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow instructions.
  • Strong understanding of animal welfare principles.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform manual labour in various weather conditions.
  • Excellent observational skills for monitoring animal health.
  • Basic communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a feedlot, abattoir, or large pastoral operation.
  • Current driver’s license.
  • Forklift license or experience operating agricultural machinery.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Knowledge of WHS regulations in an agricultural setting.
