Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Student Wellbeing Officer to join our team at Glenorchy Primary School. This vital role is central to supporting the social, emotional, and physical wellbeing of our students within the public education sector. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with students, staff, families, and external agencies to develop and implement strategies that promote positive mental health, resilience, and a safe school environment. You will be instrumental in identifying student needs, providing early intervention, and connecting students and families with appropriate support services, ensuring a comprehensive approach to student care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support and guidance to students experiencing social, emotional, or behavioral challenges.
  • Develop and implement individual and group wellbeing programs and initiatives.
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop safety plans for students at risk.
  • Liaise with parents/guardians, teachers, and school leadership regarding student wellbeing concerns.
  • Collaborate with external agencies, including mental health services, social workers, and community support organizations.
  • Facilitate workshops and information sessions for students, staff, and parents on wellbeing topics.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and interventions.
  • Act as a first point of contact for students seeking support and referral.
  • Contribute to a positive and inclusive school culture.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in a student support or wellbeing role, preferably within an educational setting.
  • Strong understanding of child and adolescent development and mental health issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, staff, and families.
  • Proven ability to manage sensitive situations and maintain confidentiality.
  • Capacity to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Current Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) check (or ability to obtain).
  • Relevant qualifications in psychology, social work, counselling, education, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with restorative practices or trauma-informed approaches.
  • Knowledge of the Tasmanian public education system.
  • First Aid and Mental Health First Aid qualifications.
  • Experience in program development and evaluation.
