Job Description
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Cemetery Groundsman to join our Facilities Services team. This respectful and ongoing role is crucial in maintaining the peaceful and dignified environment of our cemeteries. The successful candidate will be responsible for the meticulous care of cemetery grounds, including landscaping, grave digging, general maintenance, and ensuring a serene setting for visitors. This role requires a high degree of empathy, attention to detail, and physical stamina, working outdoors in various weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform all aspects of cemetery ground maintenance, including mowing, edging, weeding, pruning, and general landscaping.
- Undertake grave digging and backfilling operations, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and respectful procedures.
- Operate and maintain a variety of groundskeeping equipment, including mowers, trimmers, and small machinery.
- Prepare grave sites for burials, ensuring all necessary arrangements are in place.
- Assist with the installation and maintenance of grave markers and memorials.
- Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of cemetery facilities, including paths, seating areas, and structures.
- Interact with bereaved families and visitors in a respectful, empathetic, and professional manner.
- Adhere to all Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures.
- Assist with tree and shrub planting and care, ensuring the aesthetic appeal of the grounds.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or a similar outdoor physical role.
- Ability to operate and perform basic maintenance on groundskeeping machinery and equipment.
- Strong physical fitness and stamina for manual tasks, including digging and lifting.
- A high level of empathy, discretion, and respect when working in a sensitive environment.
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of presentation.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Valid Australian Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate II or III in Horticulture, Parks and Gardens, or a related field.
- Previous experience working in a cemetery or funeral services environment.
- Experience operating a backhoe or mini-excavator (ticket desirable).
- Current First Aid Certificate.
