Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Waste Management Planner to join our Environmental Services team. In this pivotal role, you will contribute to the strategic planning, development, and implementation of innovative waste management policies and programs across the City of Parramatta. You will be responsible for conducting research, analysing data, preparing reports, and collaborating with internal departments and external stakeholders to achieve our waste reduction and recycling targets. This position offers an exciting opportunity to shape the future of sustainable waste practices within a dynamic council environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement waste management strategies, policies, and programs in line with Council objectives and state regulations.
  • Conduct research and analysis on waste generation, composition, and disposal trends to inform decision-making.
  • Prepare detailed reports, proposals, and presentations for Council, committees, and community stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., operations, planning, community engagement) and external contractors/agencies.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of existing waste management services and identify areas for improvement.
  • Assist in the preparation of grant applications and funding proposals for waste-related projects.
  • Engage with the community to promote waste avoidance, reuse, and recycling initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental legislation and best practices.

Required Skills

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Waste Management, Urban Planning, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in waste management planning, preferably within a local government context.
  • Demonstrated understanding of contemporary waste management principles, legislation, and technologies.
  • Strong analytical, research, and report writing skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field.
  • Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) for data analysis.
  • Project management certification or proven project delivery experience.
  • Familiarity with waste management practices specific to the Greater Sydney region.
