Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-conscious Substation Technician to join our team in Alice Springs. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of high-voltage electrical equipment in substations. Your expertise will ensure the reliable operation of our energy infrastructure, contributing directly to the uninterrupted power supply for homes and businesses across the Northern Territory. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, technical proficiency, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine inspection, maintenance, and repair of substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, relays, and control systems.
- Conduct diagnostic testing and troubleshooting to identify and resolve electrical faults and operational issues.
- Assist in the installation and commissioning of new substation equipment and upgrades.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, regulations, and company procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).
- Prepare detailed reports on maintenance activities, equipment condition, and repair actions.
- Participate in on-call rotations and respond to emergency outages as required.
- Collaborate with engineers, other technicians, and field crews to ensure efficient project execution and problem resolution.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment inventory, spare parts, and tool calibration.
Required Skills
- Formal trade qualification in electrical fitting, electrical engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a Substation Technician or similar role within the energy industry.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.
- Strong knowledge of high-voltage electrical safety procedures and practices.
- Experience with power system protection and control systems.
- Demonstrated ability to perform diagnostic testing using specialized equipment (e.g., megohmmeters, relay test sets).
- Valid Australian C Class Driver's License.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant High Voltage (HV) switching authorization/certification.
- Experience with SCADA systems.
- Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience working in remote or challenging environmental conditions.
