Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and detail-oriented State Archive Clerk with a passion for historical records to join our team in Port Macquarie. This role is crucial for the preservation and accessibility of invaluable historical documents. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with the intake, cataloging, and retrieval of archival materials, ensuring their proper handling and storage. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the cultural heritage of New South Wales, working with unique and significant historical collections. You will play a vital role in maintaining the integrity of our archives and supporting researchers and the public in their historical inquiries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and catalog incoming historical records, ensuring accuracy and adherence to archival standards.
  • Assist with the physical arrangement, storage, and retrieval of archival materials.
  • Maintain inventory control and tracking systems for historical documents and collections.
  • Conduct quality control checks on record descriptions and metadata.
  • Provide support for researchers and public inquiries regarding historical records, including locating and presenting materials.
  • Assist with the digitization of historical records and metadata creation.
  • Ensure the proper handling and preservation of fragile and sensitive historical materials.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of archival practices and procedures.

Required Skills

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in data entry and database management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work meticulously with historical and often delicate materials.
  • Basic knowledge of archival principles or strong willingness to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in an archive, library, museum, or similar cultural institution.
  • Familiarity with archival description standards (e.g., ISAD(G)).
  • Experience with records management software or collection management systems.
