Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and detail-oriented Rates & Revenue Officer to join our dynamic Council Finance Department. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the accurate and efficient administration of council rates, charges, and other revenue streams. You will play a key part in ensuring financial sustainability for the Shire, providing exceptional customer service to ratepayers, and maintaining precise financial records in accordance with statutory requirements. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute directly to the financial health and operational success of our local community.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and process council rates, charges, and sundry debtors in accordance with relevant legislation and Council policies.
- Respond to ratepayer inquiries regarding property valuations, rates assessments, and payment options in a professional and timely manner.
- Manage payment plans, direct debits, and assist with debt recovery processes as required.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date ratepayer records and property information.
- Prepare and reconcile daily revenue collections and banking summaries.
- Assist with the preparation of financial reports and statements related to rates and revenue.
- Provide support to the broader finance team during peak periods and special projects.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, policies, and procedures.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a finance or revenue administration role, preferably within a local government or similar public sector environment.
- Proficiency in using financial management systems and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and record keeping.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle sensitive inquiries professionally.
- Proven ability to interpret and apply financial policies and legislation.
- Demonstrated customer service experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant qualifications in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Experience with Civica Authority or similar local government financial software.
- Knowledge of the Local Government Act 1989 (Vic) and other relevant legislation pertaining to council rates.
