Job Description

We are seeking enthusiastic and reliable Public Service General Hands to join the Wollongong City Council team. This ‘All Levels’ position welcomes applicants from various backgrounds, including those seeking an entry-level opportunity to build a career in public service. As a General Hand, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and improving our city’s public assets and services, contributing directly to the well-being of our community. You will be involved in a variety of outdoor and indoor tasks, ensuring the smooth operation and upkeep of council properties and initiatives. This is an on-site role, requiring physical presence in our beautiful city.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general labouring duties including manual handling, lifting, and carrying.
  • Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of parks, gardens, reserves, and public spaces.
  • Support council events and community programs through setup, breakdown, and general assistance.
  • Operate basic tools and light machinery safely and effectively, as required.
  • Undertake cleaning and tidying tasks in various council facilities and public areas.
  • Adhere strictly to all Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures.
  • Report any hazards, damage, or maintenance issues promptly to supervisors.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to achieve operational goals.
  • Provide friendly and helpful assistance to the public when encountered during duties.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated physical fitness and ability to perform manual tasks.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills to follow instructions and complete simple records.
  • Strong work ethic and a proactive attitude.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to WHS guidelines.
  • Current Australian Class C Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a general labouring, maintenance, or similar role.
  • Knowledge of basic horticultural practices or grounds maintenance.
  • Certification in Workplace Health and Safety (e.g., White Card).
  • Experience operating small plant equipment (e.g., mowers, blowers, pressure washers).
